Stories
Al Horstmann Proposed for Membership

Al's father was a Rotarian for many years in central Texas. He is interested in joining Rotary because he has had a long standing interest in helping the underserved both financially and through volunteer
service projects. Finally, his membership interests are simple – service projects to help those less fortunate and enjoying and making new friends.

Career:

Before retirement Al Horstmann was the Chief Operating Officer of a large locally owned commercial real estate firm in the Dallas area from 1978 to 2010.  He also owned the largest locally owned commercial landscape firm in the Dallas area having developed this company out of the commercial real estate company and purchased controlling interest in 2000. He sold the company in September 2014.

Participation in Service Organizations:
  • Al was President of the Key Club in high school in Idabel Oklahoma. Key Club is a service and volunteer based organization sponsored by the Kiwanis club.
  • He was President of Alpha Phi Omega at East Texas State University, now Texas A&M Commerce. APO is a service and leadership based fraternity, not a social fraternity.
  • He was President of the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) with about 500 members. While IREM is a trade organization, they took part in many service projects in the Dallas area.
  • He was President of the Building Owners and Manager’s Association (BOMA) in 2002 with about 750 members. Like IREM, BOMA is a trade organization that took part in many service projects and sponsored charity events in the Dallas area
