Minda Dentler is the only female handcyclist to complete three Ironman Triathlons. The polio survivor recently returned to her native India to draw attention to continued immunization efforts in the country, which hasn’t had a new case since 2014. Now a Rotary polio ambassador, Dentler shares her story with The Rotarian.

District Rotarian of the Year - Woody Alexander
Our own Woody Alexander (right) was recognized as District 5810 Rotarian of the Year by Past District Governor Larry Webb. Webb said when he read the nomination comments for Woody, "I thought, this is what being a Rotarian is all about." Click "more" to see some of Woody's accomplishments cited in the nomination.
  • Woody received the Ethics Award last November, presented by the Rotary Clubs of Richardson at the Annual EDGE Awards held by the Clubs and Richardson Chamber of Commerce.
  • Woody is active and engaged in many Military Veterans organizations. This past year he was one of the principal organizers/leaders that coordinated the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Dallas.
  • He has been actively involved with Richardson Adult Literacy for many years, volunteering his time to teach immigrants and others how to read and speak English.
  • Woody saw the completion of a major Rotary International grant project he has spearheaded on our club's behalf over the past 3 years, providing clean, sanitary toilets for 12 girls schools in India.
  • Despite having mobility issues, Woody is a 100% attendance member. He also shows up and works at most, if not all, of our Community Service projects.
  • Due to his constant efforts to assist others in anyway that he can, newer members to our club look to him as a Mentor and role model.
  • Woody is a Paul Harris Fellow.
  • He has served on the RERC Board continually for more than seven years.

Rotary University Class Schedule
Here’s the final dates for the Fall 2016 Rotary University class schedule. Classes are held from 8am-3:30pm at SMU and are $50 each.

Are you interested in getting more engaged in your Rotary club or getting more of your club members engaged? I have consistently noticed that it’s the Rotary University graduates that become the strongest club leaders across the district! Please share this info and these dates with your club members, so that we can continue to grow our clubs with excited, informed, and empowered members!

In 2017 our Rotary alums will take their first ever Rotary University Alumni Trip. We’re currently working on all the details for an incredible trip to Chicago in July or September 2017. Every day, 8,000 people die of waterborne disease. A group of Rotary members is committed to reducing the number of these deaths by providing clean water, and they’ve found a fun way to do it. Beers Rotarians Enjoy Worldwide (BREW) is a fellowship devoted to a love of beer and brewing. The fellowship helps clubs plan events around the world to raise money for global water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts.

Induction of Cynthia Jaird
Cynthia Jaird has been approved by the membership committee and the board of directors as a proposed new member of Richardson East Rotary Club. Cynthia is transferring her membership from the Lewisville Morning Rotary where she has been a member since 2014. Cynthia is an educational consultant with the Region 10 Education Service Center in Richardson. She is especially interested in working with youth services. She was 2014 Rookie of the Year in her club and worked on the Interact Club launch at The Colony High School.

As an extra treat at the induction John and Marilyn Pokorny from District 5790 and Cynthia's previous club, attended and highlighted how Cynthia's work had been instrumental in receiving an award for their club.
