Dear RERC Rotarians, the Small Groups member selection committee has formed the groups for Fall 2015 as you will see below (click more). The purpose of the small groups is to foster camaraderie and make our club stronger. The small group needs to meet once between November 1st and January 15 2016. The meeting can be an activity such as dinner or it can involve going to the theater, do volunteer work or whatever the group decides. The event can be with spouses or not. The group captain (The first person listed for each group) has the responsibility to coordinate and to document the group's activity with pictures and an associated story about the event. In addition to meeting the groups are responsible to create 2 baskets for the Casino Night. The value of each of the baskets should be around $100.
Celebrities like Emmy Award-winning actress Archie Panjabi and Grammy Award-winning singer Angélique Kidjo joined health officials like Anthony Lake, executive director of UNICEF, in celebrating recent progress in the fight to end polio during our World Polio Day update 23 October. Rotary’s highest officer in our 50-club north Texas district congratulated Richardson East Rotary for its outstanding work in providing fellowship and service.
Larry Webb, Rotary District 5810 governor, visited the club on Oct. 21 and cited several formal awards the club earned. He also highlighted its efforts to increase membership and diversity in membership, giving in significant amounts to the Rotary Foundation, conducting a very successful and visible fundraiser and local giving programs helping college-bound students and a number of charities in the community.
Among formal awards, the club was given the Presidential Citation for achieving high standards set by the district, the Bulletin Excellence Award for the weekly club bulletin, and 100 percent Paul Harris Sustaining Giving, which is a systematic giving program followed by every member in the club and designated for Rotary’s Foundation.
Webb congratulated the club for its membership efforts, which have succeeded in bucking the trend of Rotary and other service organizations of shrinking membership. He also lauded the club’s Casino Night, its only major annual fundraiser. The 20th anniversary Casino night will be Feb. 5, 2016, at the Richardson Civic Center.
Rotary’s signature international effort since the 1980s has been to eradicate polio worldwide. Webb announced that in August, Nigeria was declared polio-free, which mean that only two countries were still reporting polio cases, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The End Polio Now effort announced that those countries were expected to be declared polio free before the end of this decade.
